WHERE DO BABY ROBOTS COME FROM?
A CONVERSATION BETWEEN TJ* AND JEFF FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
TJ*: So tell me about where I came from.
Jeff: It was August of 2010.
TJ: You had just moved to Los Angeles...
Jeff: Right. That June. Finally.
TJ*: You'd wanted to get out there for years, right? Since 2006, if memory serves?
Jeff: It's true. So, one Saturday, two friends in the independent film scene told me about 'this cool event' I just HAD to check out. Turns out that there was a Q&A with Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Where the Wild Things Are) and Dave Eggers (Co-writer of WTWTA, and prolific contemporary novelist) at a bookstore in LA near West Hollywood.
TJ*:And they told everyone in the crowd to make robots!
Jeff: Not quite. They were promoting a new book that Spike had just put out - a companion piece / making-of photobook for his short film I'm Here. You can actually watch it online for free, at http://www.imheremovie.com, if you're over 21 (It's probably a PG-13 movie, but the film was sponsored by Absolut Vodka).
TJ*: Are you a big Spike Jonze fan?
Jeff: A huge one. I don't really get all fanboy, but Adaptation is one of my favorite movies all time - I wrote my term paper for a media genres class on self-reflexity in Adapation and...
TJ*: Nerd Alert!
Jeff: Hey, you're talking to a guy who makes robots in his spare time!
TJ*: Fair enough. Did you get to meet Spike?
Jeff: I did! My friends got there late and the bookstore filled up, so I made friends with the people near me in line to talk to Spike. He ware really nice, and I actually told him about my paper. Anyway, what happened next was pretty cool. After reuniting with my friends, being whisked to my first-ever downtown LA loft party, and some late-night Brazilian food, I went home with my new, signed book and DVD. The next day, I popped in the DVD and...
